The Appraisal-class was designed after Federation accountants calculated that 31% of recoverable wreck value was being lost to inadequate field assessment. Their solution was to maximize cargo volume at the expense of everything else: no weapon mounts, minimal shielding, and a top speed that Crimson salvagers find personally offensive. The oversized cargo bay ensures nothing of value gets left behind, and the fuel reserves to reach remote wreck sites mean the Appraisal operates where faster ships can't be bothered to travel. Appraisal pilots receive a quarterly bonus based on recovery-to-market-value ratio. Most of them have optimized their routes to the point where the bonus exceeds their base salary.
