The cargo bay partially exists in a pocket dimension, giving the ship significantly more internal volume than its external dimensions suggest. Other empires' engineers insist this is impossible. Voidborn quartermasters respond by loading 635 units of cargo into a hull that external measurements suggest should hold 200. The dimensional fold requires constant shield power to maintain, which explains the high shield capacity — if the fold collapses, the cargo doesn't disappear, but the cleanup is described in Collective maintenance manuals as "geometrically complicated."
