Lore

The Gas Tanker-class was designed by Federation accountants before it was designed by engineers. Specification one: maximum gas collection volume per trip. Everything else was negotiable. Dual cargo expanders push the pressurized hold well past any competing gas harvester, and the compression system packs collected gas tight enough that other empires' safety inspectors would object if anyone asked them. Nobody asks them. The Gas Tanker doesn't fight, it doesn't hurry, and it doesn't come back until every cubic meter of hold space is earning its keep.
