The Confederacy does not, as a rule, build a ship to do everything — its design committees prefer a specialist for each task, each with its own documentation. The Polymath is the exception they grant exactly once, to a captain who has mastered a discipline outright. It carries mining lasers, weapon mounts, survey gear, and cargo holds in the same hull, and a review board will tell you, accurately, that a dedicated miner pulls more ore, a cruiser brings more guns, a hauler moves more freight, and an explorer sees farther. The Polymath's answer is that it does all four without docking to refit, which no specialist can claim. It is assembled from a component of nearly every vessel in the Solarian catalog, and it is priced as though you bought one of each — because, in materials, you very nearly did.
